David Heska Wanbli Weiden, an enrolled member of the Sicangu Lakota nation, is author of the novel Winter Counts, an Indie Next selection; chosen as one of 2020’s most anticipated books by Library Journal, USA Today, CrimeReads, BuzzFeed, The Rumpus, and Book Riot, and receiving rave reviews from Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, and Booklist. Weiden is also the author of the children’s book Spotted Tail, a biography of the great Lakota leader and winner of the 2020 Spur Award from the Western Writers of America. He received his MFA in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts and is an alumnus of VONA, a Tin House Scholar, a MacDowell Colony Fellow, a Ragdale Foundation resident, and received the PEN/America Writing for Justice Fellowship. He’s an active member of the Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers, Western Writers of America, and the Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers. Weiden is Professor of Native American Studies and Political Science at Metropolitan State University of Denver, and lives in Colorado with his two sons.
